| TECHNOLOGY Because the Simeon Course on Biblical Exposition is an 'online course,' participating will require access to specific technologies. That is, you will need access to a computer (PC or Mac), a high-speed internet connection, and certain kinds of software. If you add on the video-conferencing option, you will also need a compatible webcam. HARDWARE/SOFTWARE First, most standard personal computers produced in the last five years are more than adequate to access the student website and view online videos. If you have any questions about your hardware, please send us an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Second, a relatively recent web browser will be needed for accessing the course website. Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Apple Safari have been tested, as have Opera and Google Chrome. Recent versions of these browsers are easily downloaded and installed. Third, the Internet connection speed is somewhat important. Your connection speed will determine the length of time it takes to download particular video and audio files or the length of buffering required if you choose to view a video online. If you add on the video-conferencing option, the speed will determine the quality of the video-conference. Most standard broadband connections should be adequate, though a minimum speed of 1.5mbs is recommended. The video-conferencing has been tested on both Cable and DSL connections in the US and on mobile-broadband in the UK. VIDEO SOFTWARE/PLUGINS The video requirements for the Simeon Course are easily met. Because the Course videos are viewable via Flash as well as distributed in multiple formats (including the .mp4 and the .wmv format), most standard computers should be adequate for viewing the videos. If you have any questions about whether your hardware is adequate, please contact the Simeon Course Director. If you choose to view the videos on the website via Flash, you will need the Flash Player from Adobe. If you choose to download the videos rather than view them on the website via Flash, you will need either the Windows Media Player from Microsoft (for .wmv files) or iTunes from Apple (for .mp4 files). Most other media players will also work. VIDEO-CONFERENCING If you add on the video-conferencing option, you will need access to a multi-party video-conferencing platform as well as a compatible webcam. Access to our preferred platform (managed by a third-party business) will be included in your registration fee. We urge you to get in touch with us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to discuss this option before purchasing a webcam. |
